The New Period!

Welcome to

Vasikana Vedu

A nonprofit organisation whose mission lies in empowering women. Our focus areas are sexual reproductive health advocacy, as we believe emancipating this domain of women’s lives allows them to become active community members, and gain agency and autonomy.

We seek to address issues surrounding period poverty in the sub-Saharan African region by providing women with alternative sanitary products. Alongside this, we hope to bring in a cultural change that will rid our society of age-old taboos surrounding the use of intra-vaginal sanitary products, which often have stifled women’s ability to have access to safe sanitation, and overall, has objectified the bodies of women, placing ownership in the hands of their communities and not themselves.

Our Pillars

The foundation of this organization is built on three main pillars as our hope is through the intersection of methodologies, we will be able to enact sustainable, long-term change.

1. Research

Alongside the distribution of the menstrual cups, we aim to conduct surveys and data compilation as a means to assess the efficacy of our interventions. We aim to consistently provide menstruators with solutions that directly benefit them and are attuned to their needs.

Education

Based on our experience in the field and the testimonies of menstruators we have helped, distribution alone is not enough.  As such, we hope to serve as a conduit of educational resources surrounding everything menstrual cycle-related.

3. Distribution

In partnership with VivaLily (formerly known and Butterfly Cup), we hope to provide menstruators in high-density and low-income communities with the menstrual cup as a means to address period poverty.

Our Impact

Our business model relies on an acknowledgment that to better the life of one menstruator, we have to better the lives of all menstruators.
